New Year's Resolutions: Improve your English every day with LingoClip

Updated: Jul 26

Video Transcript:

One of my New Year's resolutions for this year is to improve my Spanish. Two ways that I'm going to work towards this goal is by reading a novel by one of my favorite authors in Spanish and English, and the other is by using the LingoClip app.

In this video, I'm going to show you how to use the LingoClip app to improve your English skills. But just a warning, it can be addictive!!

What is LingoClip?

LingoClip is an app you can use to learn languages through listening to music videos and completing the lyrics (or words of the song). There is a free and pro version. The free version allows you to play three games per day and the pro version costs $30 a year.

Download the LingoClip app to your mobile device and open the app. In the beginning, you can go through the introduction or select skip. Then select get started. It will ask you what language you want to learn.

When you open LingoClip, you see your homepage. In the bottom right-hand corner is your profile. So if you want to track your progress, which I highly suggest, select profile and select sign up.

By signing up, you won't lose your progress and achievements, you can play on any device, and you can compete with others and challenge your friends. You can sign up with Apple, Google, Facebook, or email. I highly suggest signing up with Apple, Google, or Facebook, so you don't have to create a new password. I'm gonna select already a member because I have an account. I'm going to select sign in with Google, select my email account, and it automatically logs me in.

Home Page

At the top, you can see that you can select different languages to practice. About 13 languages are available. In the top right corner, you can select the search menu. You can search for music lyrics (or a song) or an artist (or music group).

In the center is your language level. Below your level, you have the words that you are practicing from the different songs (the lyrics), music videos you have tried, and days streak (or how many days in a row you have practiced in the app).

There are different topic sections below. The first is Featured Lyrics. On the right, you see the three dots icon? You can select it to see a list of the music videos in the category.

Next, there are Top Lyrics of what people have practiced. Songs are categorized into Genres for example pop, rock, hard rock, heavy metal, and at the end of the list, there is Latino, country, reggae, and also movie scenes, TV shows, and others. So definitely check those out.

Other categories include New Lyrics that have been added recently, Hot Lyrics that people have been practicing more frequently lately, and Love is in the Air.

Bottom Menu Bar

At the bottom, you will see a menu bar. The first icon is yourHome screen. Then, Activity is a list of the songs that you have practiced. Next is Vocabulary or the words you practiced in the songs and Awards that you are earning and have earned. So you have a level awards, lyrics awards, and words awards.

And the bottom right is your Profile. You can see the activity, vocabulary and awards here. This is where you find your Favorites. So you can add songs you want to practice here or that you like.

Settings

And last is the Settings. Here's your subscription, your username and email. You can change your password and you can turn on or off how you want to sign in. At the bottom is your country, birth date and where you can log out or delete your account.

Levels & Dialects

So let's look at a song. I believe one that I practiced with my students is "Just the Way You Are" by Bruno Mars. So you can see in the top right, there are different colors. Green is easy, orange is medium, and red is difficult.

There's also a flag. So Bruno Mars is American English and Ed Sheeran is British English.

And then you can see all the different countries. Well, you're practicing English here where there are only two or three, but if you change to Spanish, you can see more of the different countries that they have in the app.

Guide: 5 essential English apps for beginners

Choice mode

Let's look at the song. So there are three types of activities or game modes. So you have Choice, Type and Karaoke. I'm gonna look at Choice. You can select your difficulty level. I always start with Beginner. Click Start and then you'll select the missing words.

Oh, her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they're not shining. Her hair, her hair

Oh, her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they're not shining. Her hair, her hair falls perfectly without her trying. She's so beautiful and I tell her every day.

So if you don't know the word, you can swipe to the left. If you swipe to the right, it will skip the word. So it automatically added the word. If you swipe to the left, it will repeat.

I know, I know when I compliment her, she won't believe me. And it's so, it's so sad.

Yeah I know, I know when I compliment her, she won't believe me and it's so, it's so sad to think she don't see what I see but every time she asks me

Swipe to the left to repeat.

And it's so, it's so sad to think that she don't see what I see, but every time she asks me, do I look okay? And when you smile, I could kiss them all day if she'd let me.

Her laugh, her laugh she hates but I think its so sexy. She's so beautiful.

Her laugh, her laugh, she hates, but I think it's so sexy. She's so beautiful. And I tell her every day. Oh, you know, you know, you know, I'll never ask you to change. If perfect is what you're searching for then just stay the same.

I'd never ask you to change. If perfect is what you're searching for then just stay the same. So don't even bother asking if you look okay, you know I'll say.

At the top, you can see how many word gaps are left.

So there's 17 missing words left in the lyrics. 18 words were correct. One was incorrect.

I'm not sure what the last one is, and I think that in the corner is how many times you have played the song.

So if you don't finish in time, you can Try Again from the beginning, Keep Playing, Continue or Quit the game. So I'm going to keep playing so we can get the final results.

That I would change. 'Cause you're amazing just the way you are.

And when you smile the whole world stops and stares for a while 'cause girl you're amazing just the way you are. Yeah.

End of game options

So if you click on the video, you can get the ending options. Resume is continue, Restart is start from the beginning, Settings or Quit. So we're gonna quit.

Game results

The results show you your language level and how many words you were practicing. Then click continue. This is where you see where you rank in the leaderboard against people around the world. Or I guess you can change it to My Country as well. I guess I'm first place.

You can play again if you want. In the video, you can select the heart to mark it as your favorite and you can also upload it to wherever you wanna share it. So let's go back.

In the game mode for Choice, for Intermediate you fill in 74 words of 287. Advanced is 148 of 287 words. And Expert level you fill in all the words.

Let's check the leaderboard and see if anyone else is there. There we go. So then you see all the people from around the world.

Karaoke mode

In Karaoke mode, you can look at it to see if you want to practice this song. It has all the lyrics. The karaoke section is also where you can get translations by selecting a word or sentence.

So I'm gonna select a word first. I'm gonna translate to Spanish and so it has the translation. Once you select your language, it will automatically default to that language. You can select a word, phrase, or sentence. This is a very good way to learn the vocabulary in context.

Type mode

And then there is Type mode, which is in beta, to type the missing words. You can select your difficulty level.

Oh her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they're not shining. Her hair, her hair falls

Punctuation is automatic.

Her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they're not shining. Her hair, her hair falls perfectly without her trying. She's so beautiful.

Very nice. And to quit, select the video and you can quit.

So that is it for lyrics on LingoClip. Hope you enjoy it!
